Sooty copper

Lycaena tityrus

One of the commoner coppers with a wingspan of 28-32 mm, males are distinctly dark brown to black while females are coppery and brown. There are several subspecies in Lebanon. The sooty lives in a number of habitats, like dry scrub, tracksides, woodland, damp meadows, grassland, pastures, and mountain valleys. Host plants include curled dock (Rumex crispus) and field sorrel (R. acetosella). It flies April through October in several broods, the flight is fast and erratic.
