Lesser death’s head hawkmoth – LEPIDOPTERA LIBANOTICA

Lesser death’s head hawkmoth

Acherontia styx

A large hawkmoth with a wingspan of 70-100 mm, resembles the death’s head but is distinguished in having an additional medial band on the underside of the forewing, no dark bands across the ventral surface of the abdomen, darker skull-like marking, and an orange forewing discal spot. Also called the “bee robber,” this species is particularly fond of honey and frequents beehives.
