A large hawkmoth with a wingspan of 60-80 mm, males are slightly smaller. Host plants include bedstraw (Galium spp.), docks (Rumex spp.), spurge (Euphorbia spp.), scabious (Scabiosa spp.), toadflax (Linaria spp.), snapdragons (Antirrhinum spp.), willowherb (Epilobium spp.), flax (Linum spp.), grapevine (Vitis spp.), and asphodels (Asphodelus spp.). This moth flies February through October, and is migratory.
