Carniolan burnet

Zygaena carniolica illiterata

A burnet with a wingspan of 30-35 mm. Also called the “crepuscular burnet,” this species lives on warm dry slopes, grassland, pastures, and steppe. Host plants include birdsfoot-trefoils (Lotus spp.), kidney-vetch (Anthyllis spp.), Canary-clover (Dorycnium spp.), and sainfoin (Onobrychis spp.). This species flies July through August.
