Cleopatra – LEPIDOPTERA LIBANOTICA

Cleopatra

Gonepteryx cleopatra taurica

A larger of the brimstones with a wingspan of 50-70 mm, resembles the commoner brimstone species but males are of a deeper yellow colour with orange patches on the forewings, while females are lighter. The Cleopatra lives in many different types of habitats, in wetland, scrub, oak forests, woodland edges, open thickets, and stony slopes. Host plants are trees, the common buckthorn (Rhamnus catharticus) and Mediterranean buckthorn (R. alaternus). This species flies from May through August, the flight is strong and often over long distances.
