Smerinthus ocellatus

A larger hawkmoth with a wingspan of 70-95 mm, resembles the southern eyed but distinguished by the large, circular hindwing eyespot. The eyed prefers gardens, parks, scrub, and woodland. Host plants include poplar (Populus spp.), willow (Salix spp.), and apple (Malus spp.). This moth flies May and June.
