False Apollo

Archon apollinus bellargus

A medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 54-60 mm, resembling the swallowtails and festoons but with greyish semitransparent forewings. This butterfly lives in many different types of habitats, on coastal dunes, in vineyards and farmland, meadows, forests, and high mountains. Host plants are numerous species of birthworts (Aristolochia spp.). This butterfly flies early in the year, from January through May.
