Ruddy darter

Sympetrum sanguineum

A small dragonfly with a body length of 34-39 mm and a hindwing length of 23-31 mm, the black legs, small orange patch at the base of the hindwing, and deep red, club-shaped abdomen in males are characteristic. This dragonfly lives near quiet ponds, lakes, marshes, and swamps bordered by reeds and rushes. The ruddy flies June through November, spending much time perched on the water’s edge.
