Southern skimmer

Orthetrum brunneum

A medium-sized dragonfly with a body length of 41-49 mm and a hindwing length of 33-37 mm, males sky blue while females yellowish- or greyish-brown. This dragonfly prefers small sunny streams, canals, and irrigation ditches. This species flies June through August, spending much of its time perched on the water’s edge or sitting on pebbles on the ground.
