Tessellated skipper

Muschampia tessellum cribrelloides

A larger skipper with a wingspan of 32-36 mm, resembles the large grizzled but is larger and of a darker brown colour without the greenish tinge and with whiter markings. The tessellated is found in scrub overgrowing with vetch, thyme, and yarrow, grassy slopes, and meadows. The host plants associated with this species are phlomis (Phlomis spp.). It flies May through early August, the flight is fast and close to the ground.
